All Hunter Biden may be asking for this Christmas is a presidential pardon. After seeing his sweetheart deal nixed by a judge in Delaware and watching his dad’s administration be forced to create a special counsel to investigate his alleged wrongdoings, the son of the president may be looking at nearly two decades in federal prison.
Hunter Biden has been charged with nine counts of federal charges related to tax fraud.
NBC News writes:
The 56-page court filing laid out a series of charges, including allegations that the president’s son failed to pay taxes, failed to file, evaded an assessment and filed a fraudulent form. The indictment alleges that “rather than pay his taxes, the Defendant spent millions of dollars on an extravagant lifestyle.”
The charges, which include six misdemeanor tax offenses, were brought by special counsel David Weiss. The case was assigned to Judge Mark Scarsi, who was appointed by former President Donald Trump.
The maximum penalty the president’s son could face if convicted is 17 years in prison, according to Weiss’ office.
“According to the indictment, Hunter Biden engaged in a four-year scheme in which he chose not to pay at least $1.4 million in self-assessed federal taxes he owed for tax years 2016 through 2019 and to evade the assessment of taxes for tax year 2018 when he filed false returns,” Weiss’ office said in a news release.
Reports have alleged that Hunter Biden developed a scheme with his “sugar brother” to label a considerable sum of money he accepted for his “services” as “loans” in an effort to avoid paying taxes.

Weiss has investigated Hunter Biden since 2019 and over the summer, Attorney General Merrick Garland gave the U.S. Attorney special counsel status in a move that infuriated the White House.
In September, a cold relationship turned into a freeze between Garland and Biden staff. “Respect and admiration among White House aides for Garland, a longtime federal appeals-court judge chosen to underscore the independence of the Justice Department, has shifted for some into resignation and distrust. They point to Garland having appointed not just a special counsel to investigate former President Donald Trump, but two others as well: one looking into Biden and another probing his son, Hunter Biden. On Thursday, the latter indicted the younger Biden on gun charges, according to The Wall Street Journal.
“Some Biden aides have said they see Garland’s handling of the inquiries into the Biden family as driven less by a dispassionate pursuit of justice than by a punctilious desire to give the appearance that sensitive investigations are walled off from political pressure, people familiar with the matter say.”
What’s colder than freezing?
Even The New York Times noted that “the decision to file criminal charges against the president’s troubled son was an extraordinary step for Mr. Weiss, who was named a special counsel in August by Attorney General Merrick B. Garland after the dramatic last-minute collapse of the plea deal that would have resolved the long-running investigation without Mr. Biden serving any prison time.”
There will likely be two federal trials pulling at the public’s attention during a presidential year, presuming Donald Trump does win the nomination from the Republicans.
The Gray Lady continues, “The Hunter Biden case sits at the crowded intersection of America’s colliding political and legal systems. There is now a very real prospect that President Biden’s son will be defending himself in two federal criminal trials during a presidential election year — as former President Donald J. Trump, his father’s likely opponent, confronts two possible trials in his federal documents and election interference cases.
Republican leaders in the House released draft text of a procedural impeachment resolution against President Biden on Thursday, just hours before word of the new charges started to percolate through official Washington. It is not clear what effect the indictment will have their inquiry.”
A vote to formally begin impeachment investigations into Joe Biden’s role in his son’s affairs may come as early as next week.
