President Donald Trump sharply criticized former FBI Director James Comey on Wednesday, escalating tensions after federal prosecutors unveiled charges tied to a controversial social media post that authorities say carried a threatening message.
The dispute centers on a 2025 Instagram image posted by Comey, which showed seashells arranged on a beach to form the numbers “86 47.” On Tuesday, the Department of Justice filed a two-count indictment related to the image, alleging it represented what prosecutors described as “a serious expression of an intent” to harm the president.
Trump responded forcefully in a late-night post on Truth Social, accusing Comey of knowingly using coded language with violent implications. The president argued that “86” is a mob term meaning “kill him,” and claimed the message amounted to a direct threat against the 47th president.
“James Comey, who is a Dirty Cop, one of the worst, knows this full well,” Trump wrote, doubling down on his interpretation of the phrase. His comments reflected a broader frustration with what he sees as politically charged actions from figures tied to past investigations into his administration.
Prosecutors, in their filing, echoed concerns about the meaning behind the post, interpreting “86 47” as a coded call to eliminate the president. The indictment frames the image not as an innocent or abstract display, but as a message with potentially dangerous implications.
At the same time, the phrase “86” has multiple meanings in common usage. It is often used in restaurant settings to indicate that an item should be removed or discarded, or to signal that a person should be ejected from a location. That ambiguity has become a central point in the unfolding controversy.
Comey has pushed back strongly against the charges. In a video posted to Substack following the announcement by Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and FBI Director Kash Patel, he rejected the allegations and vowed to fight the case.
“I’m still innocent, I’m still not afraid, and I still believe in the independent federal judiciary, so let’s go,” Comey said, framing the indictment as the latest chapter in a series of legal battles. He also noted that a prior Justice Department investigation into claims he misled Congress ultimately collapsed before reaching trial.
The clash highlights the deep and ongoing divisions between Trump and former officials tied to past federal investigations. It also underscores the broader tension surrounding how intent is interpreted in an era where messages—especially those shared online—can carry multiple meanings depending on context.
As the case moves forward, it is likely to draw continued scrutiny not only because of the high-profile figures involved, but also because of the larger questions it raises about speech, interpretation, and accountability. In a political climate already defined by sharp disagreements, the episode serves as another flashpoint, with both sides digging in as the legal process begins to unfold.
