Democrats are desperate to throw former President Donald Trump in jail by any means necessary, and now they believe they have found the perfect trick.
Earlier in the week, Fox News wrote, “Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg filed a motion Tuesday to hold former President Trump in contempt of court, claiming he violated the gag order imposed upon him by publishing three social media posts relating to two known witnesses in his criminal trial — Michael Cohen and Stormy Daniels.
Bragg is urging Manhattan Judge Juan Merchan to also warn Trump that ‘future violations’ of the gag order can be punished ‘not only with additional fines, but also with a term of incarceration of up to thirty days.’
Merchan last month imposed a gag order on Trump, due to his ‘prior extrajudicial statements.’ Merchan said they established “a sufficient risk to the administration of justice.’
Merchan ordered that Trump cannot make or direct others to make public statements about witnesses concerning their potential participation or about counsel in the case — other than Bragg — or about court staff, DA staff or family members of staff.”
The judge also said that Trump could not make public statements about jurors or prospective jurors who will ultimately decide his fate over the charges.
A CNN panel featuring the former president’s biggest media nemesis, Jim Acosta, was almost giddy at the thought of jailing the leading challenger to Joe Biden because of his refusal to be silenced about discussing the ongoing trial, reported The Daily Caller.
Prosecutors have accused Trump of violating an expanded gag order imposed on the former president April 1 by New York Judge Juan Merchan based on a series of Truth Social posts, with a possible penalty being jail time. One guest on “CNN This Morning” suggested Trump should spend some time in jail, but also warned of potential strife and fallout for President Joe Biden if the judge decides to lock him up.
“I was talking to [former prosecutor] Joey Jackson yesterday and he said, you know, after that Truth Social post where he was quoting Jesse Watters, and he’s sort of insinuating that people are lying their way into the jury, which prosecutors say that that violates a gag order,” host Jim Acosta said. “Joey Jackson was saying, maybe it’s time for the judge to send a message to Trump, put him in the holding cell for a couple of hours, see if that changes his mood. What do you think?”
“Absolutely,” former federal prosecutor Elliot Williams said. “The problem is that it’s not clear how much authority that the judge has to just do that. The judge, at a minimum, has to have a hearing under New York state law. It’s not the judge being weak or feckless or afraid of Donald Trump. The law says that there’s a process that he has to follow. And now the question is, is it civil contempt where you’re trying to compel him to behave better in the future, is it criminal contempt where you’re locking him up for things he’s done in the past, which is much harder and almost, in effect, requires a separate trial.”
A hearing is slated for Monday on whether Trump violated the gag order and if the judge should hold the former president in contempt, according to Axios. Democratic Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has requested the judge hold Trump in contempt as well as threaten him with jail time.
As Trump continues to lead in swing state polls, Democrats have gotten more and more desperate to undermine the former president, even going so far as to threaten his safety.
Politico reported that Congressman Bennie Johnson, a Democrat from Mississippi and former chairman of the January 6 Committee, “has filed legislation that would strip Secret Service protection for anyone sentenced to jail for a felony, our colleague Kyle Cheney reports.
It’s a not-so-subtle shot at Donald Trump, who is sitting in an NYC courtroom facing felony charges this week. Under the Mississippi Democrat’s bill, Secret Service protection ‘shall terminate for any person upon sentencing following conviction for a Federal or State offense that is punishable for a term of imprisonment of at least one year.’”
Stripping the former president of his Secret Service might make one Democrat very happy. Last November, liberal congressman from New York, Dan Goldman, who served as a lawyer against Trump during his first impeachment, called for the former president to be “eliminated.”
At the beginning of the month, The Wall Street Journal found that “Donald Trump is leading President Biden in six of the seven most competitive states in the 2024 election, propelled by broad voter dissatisfaction with the national economy and deep doubts about Biden’s capabilities and job performance…The poll of the election’s main battlegrounds shows Trump holding leads of between 2 and 8 percentage points in six states—Pennsylvania, Michigan, Arizona, Georgia, Nevada and North Carolina—on a test ballot that includes third-party and independent candidates. Trump holds similar leads when voters are asked to choose only between him and Biden.”
On Friday, Biden also got bad news out of Michigan. RFK, Jr., to whom Biden has also denied Secret Service protection, qualified for the Michigan ballot, a move that is a massive blow to the president’s chances of a second term.
