Karen Bass Advances to Runoff as Los Angeles Voters Set Stage for November Showdown

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is projected to advance to the general election as she seeks a second term leading the nation’s second-largest city, according to a projection issued by Decision Desk HQ early Wednesday.

While Bass secured a place in the November runoff, the identity of her challenger remained unsettled as election officials continued counting ballots from Tuesday’s municipal election.

The first-term mayor entered the race facing a challenging political environment and a field of opponents that included Republican reality television personality Spencer Pratt and progressive Los Angeles City Council member Nithya Raman, among others.

Although the Los Angeles mayoral contest is officially nonpartisan, the race has drawn significant attention because of the differing political backgrounds and approaches represented by the leading candidates.

Under the city’s election rules, a candidate must receive more than 51 percent of the vote to avoid a runoff election. Bass did not reach that threshold in the June 2 contest, meaning the race will continue through the fall and culminate in a Nov. 3 runoff between the mayor and the eventual second-place finisher.

As of 6:30 a.m. EDT Wednesday, Pratt held a notable advantage over Raman. With just over half of the vote reported, Pratt led the city council member by nearly nine percentage points, positioning himself as the most likely candidate to advance and challenge Bass in November.

The results suggest that voters are preparing for what could become a closely watched runoff campaign over the next several months. While the final makeup of the contest has not yet been determined, the early numbers point toward a race that could feature a clear contrast between the incumbent mayor and a challenger presenting himself as an alternative to the city’s current direction.

Bass’s advancement comes despite sustained criticism during her first term in office. The mayor has faced intense scrutiny over several high-profile issues that have dominated public discussion in Los Angeles.

Among the most significant challenges confronting her administration have been questions surrounding the city’s response to the 2025 Pacific Palisades wildfires and the ongoing homelessness crisis. Both issues have remained major concerns for residents and have frequently surfaced throughout the campaign.

Critics have argued that city leadership should be held accountable for its handling of these matters, while supporters of the mayor have continued to back her efforts as she seeks another four years in office.

Despite those controversies, the early election results indicate that Bass retains substantial support among Los Angeles voters. Her ability to secure a place in the runoff suggests that many residents remain willing to give her administration an opportunity to continue its work.

At the same time, the strong performance by her challengers highlights continuing dissatisfaction among portions of the electorate and signals that key issues facing the city will likely remain at the center of the campaign heading into November.

With months remaining before the general election, candidates will now turn their attention toward persuading voters who have yet to make up their minds and consolidating support from those whose preferred candidates fail to advance.

For now, one thing is clear: Karen Bass will remain on the ballot this fall. The only unanswered question is which challenger will emerge from the remaining vote count to face her in what promises to be a closely watched runoff election.

As Los Angeles continues to grapple with major policy challenges at home, voters will soon have another opportunity to decide who they believe is best equipped to lead the city forward.
