Your commute over the next few months might take you a little bit longer. European climate change activists are planning to come to the United States, and they’re planning to do more than merely slashing the tires on SUVs.
Last week, The Daily Mail wrote that “Europe’s top climate activists are planning a ‘large-scale civil disobedience campaign’ of highway blockages, hunger strikes and disruption at ‘federal properties’ in the US in August.”
Leaders from Extinction Rebellion (XR) and other European groups known for their large-scale disturbances are rapidly expanding their US-based franchise, Declare Emergency, to create mayhem on this side of the Atlantic.
In a videoconference, which DailyMail.com attended, the Europeans taught their US allies how to raise money, boost membership and recruit scores of ‘arrestable’ members to spearhead the most aggressive protests.”
Now it looks like these climate radicals have at least one ally in the United States House. “Squad” member, Michigan Democrat Rashida Tlaib recently urged radical climate change activists to take more action this summer during an online meeting with several wealthy promoters of environmentalist protesters.
The Daily Mail gained access to a private meeting in which Tlaib encouraged 125 hardliners from Climate Defiance, Declare Emergency and other environmental groups to continue to take “direct action.”
The newspaper writes that “activists have already blocked US highways, vandalized an artwork in Washington, and heckled politicians at speaking engagements. They’re understood to be plotting much larger European-style climate protests later this summer.
‘If we don’t get the policies we need, if our legislative process is failing us, then direct action gets the goods.’
The congresswoman praised the groups’ ‘civil disobedience actions’ and urged them to ‘use the bullhorn,’ saying Congress and the White House would not cut pollution enough until ‘the streets demanded it.’
Tlaib was joined by filmmaker Adam McKay, who pledged $100,000 to fund climate activism in the US, the environmental journalist David Wallace-Wells, and activists who had broken laws and served jail time for their protests.
They include Tim Martin, who faces jail over a protest at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, in April, when he and Joanna Smith allegedly daubed paint on the case protecting Edgar Degas’ Little Dancer Aged Fourteen.”
Martin’s environmentalist group, Declare Emergency, is an American offshoot of the European group Extinction Rebellion. The group demands that President Biden “declare a climate emergency.” Along with attacking the National Gallery of Art, they also blocked the GW Parkway in Washington, D.C last April.
Senator Marco Rubio has taken steps to try and prevent the United States from being bogged down by European-style protests aimed at disrupting American transit systems. He recently wrote a letter to the Secretary of Homeland Security and Director of the FBI asking what “steps they are taking to prevent members of Extinction Rebellion from entering the United States.”
The Florida senator insisted that members of Extinction Rebellion plan to enter the country “for the purposes of fomenting civil unrest in pursuit of their extreme political agenda.”
He continued: “Members of Extinction Rebellion, a radical European climate cult known for causing civil unrest and engaging in illegal and disruptive activities, reportedly plan to enter the United States to cause chaos in furtherance of their anti-human climate agenda. Among other things, the group will allegedly block highways and disrupt federal properties, but violence and terrorist acts cannot be discounted given the group’s past threats. In 2021, the spokesperson of an Extinction Rebellion affiliate previewed potential widespread violence, stating, “[n]ot only will pipelines be blown up, but we can be certain that world leaders will be put on trial for treason or worse — be killed.”
Groups affiliated with Extinction Rebellion have already carried out disruptive acts in the United States. Over the course of two days in April, climate radicals with the group “Declare Emergency,” the U.S.-based sister organization of Extinction Rebellion, carried out disruptive and damaging activities in Washington, D.C. and blocked a major capital area roadway. Blocking major highways and roadways is not a victimless crime. Even small delays that prevent first responders from reaching injured patients or victims of crime can mean the difference between life and death. Despite the potentially deadly consequences, these zealots continue to plot illegal and disruptive activities in pursuit of their radical and destructive climate agenda.”
Earlier in the year, TIME noted that a “string of mysterious attacks on power stations across the U.S.” had “rekindled fears about the vulnerabilities of America’s electricity infrastructure, which security officials have warned presents a growing target to extremists and saboteurs.”
New Conservative Post wrote in February, “Leftwing activists have been outspoken about using violence against fossil fuels. Andreas Malm, an associate professor of human ecology at Lund University and author of How to Blow Up a Pipeline said last year that “the task for the climate movement is to make clear for people that building new pipelines, new gas terminals, opening new oil fields are acts of violence that need to be stopped — they kill people.”
Malm, according to Bloomberg, “argues that while the majority of climate action should remain non-violent, no social sea change — from the suffragettes to the Civil Rights Movement — has succeeded through completely peaceful activism. “We shouldn’t engage in assassinations or terrorism, or use arms and things like that,” he says. “But until that line or boundary, we need virtually everything …all the way up to sabotage and property destruction.”
Climate radicals willing to become violent have support in the United States in other powerful institutions outside of Congress, as well. Last year, Hollywood Malm’s instruction manual for violence into a “thriller” that valorizes attacks on infrastructure that keeps the country moving and the lights on.
