Conservative commentator Scott Jennings faced a blunt challenge Thursday night on CNN when fellow pro-MAGA pundit Caroline Sunshine questioned whether he had actually spoken with Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.
The tense exchange unfolded on “CNN NewsNight” during an already heated debate about the war with Iran. Jennings was defending the Trump administration’s assessment of Tehran’s nuclear capabilities when Sunshine, a former Trump White House aide and vocal opponent of the war, challenged his previous comments.
Sunshine claimed Jennings had said at the beginning of the conflict that success would be defined by Iran’s government being overthrown.
“Never said that,” Jennings responded, insisting that the Iranian regime did not have to be completely changed for the war to be considered successful.
Sunshine then accused Jennings of saying the conflict would last four to six weeks.
“I never said that,” Jennings fired back.
“Yes you did,” Sunshine replied. “Maybe we roll the tape later.”
Jennings maintained that his definition of victory had always been preventing Iran from ever obtaining a nuclear weapon.
Sunshine pushed back by pointing to U.S. intelligence assessments from both the beginning of the war and the present. She said the assessments found that Iran did not want a nuclear weapon, was not building one and did not possess one.
“Why do you not believe the intelligence?” Sunshine asked.
Jennings turned the question around, asking why Sunshine did not believe the Trump administration. He specifically asked whether she trusted the president’s son-in-law and his envoy.
Sunshine then abruptly shifted the conversation to Jennings’ claims that he had spoken with McConnell by phone amid questions about the long-absent senator’s condition.
“I don’t believe you had a phone call with Mitch McConnell, I’ll tell you that,” Sunshine said. “I don’t believe you had a 20-minute phone call with Mitch McConnell, and I don’t think a lot of people do, either.”
Jennings rejected the accusation and described Sunshine as sounding like “a garden-variety conspiracy theorist.”
CNN host Abby Phillip attempted to step into the heated exchange, but Sunshine continued pressing Jennings about McConnell.
“How is he?” Sunshine asked mockingly. “Have you talked with him lately?”
“Yeah,” Jennings answered.
Jennings previously predicted that McConnell would return to Washington when the Senate reconvenes on Sept. 14.
The 84-year-old Kentucky Republican was reportedly hospitalized in June after suffering a fall and later developing pneumonia. The report about his hospitalization followed questions regarding the senator’s extended absence.
The clash marked another contentious moment between the two conservative commentators as they disputed both the Trump administration’s handling of Iran and Jennings’ account of his communications with McConnell.
